The Writer's Spark Coaching Competition
The Writer's Spark Coaching Competion is now open, and closes on November 4, 2025

Every writer knows the feeling—that moment when the words flow effortlessly, when inspiration strikes, and your creative energy feels unstoppable. But what happens when that spark dims? When writer's block settles in, self-doubt creeps up, or life simply gets in the way of your writing dreams?

The Writer's Spark Coaching Competition

At On Creative Writing, we understand that creative writers need more than just talent—they need support, guidance, and sometimes a gentle push to reignite their passion. That's why we're thrilled to announce The Writer's Spark Coaching Competition, designed to provide one deserving writer with the tools, encouragement, and professional support they need to move forward with confidence.

More than a prize—it's creative ignition

The Writer's Spark Competition isn't just about winning; it's about transformation. We've carefully curated a prize package worth over $1,500 that addresses the real challenges writers face: staying motivated, improving craft, finding focus, and gaining recognition.

What's included in the prize?

Professional Coaching with Fiona Fenwick Two one-hour coaching sessions (valued at $1,200 NZD) with renowned coach and mentor Fiona Fenwick, who specializes in helping creative writers reconnect with their energy and clarity. Fiona's approach tackles the root causes of creative blocks, helping writers overcome self-doubt and build sustainable writing habits. The sessions are spaced strategically—an initial deep-dive session followed by a follow-up session 3-4 months later, plus email support as needed.

Brain.fm annual membership A full year's access to Brain.fm (valued at $66.99 US)—scientifically engineered music designed to help your brain achieve focus, relaxation, or better sleep. This isn't background music; it's neuroscience-backed audio that helps your neurons fire in concert, creating the perfect mental state for productive writing sessions.

Professional editing with Sheelagh Caygill Two hours of personalized editing and feedback (valued at $300 CAD) from experienced journalist and creative writer Sheelagh Caygill. Whether you need developmental feedback, line editing, or simply want a professional beta reader's perspective, this session can be tailored to your specific needs.

Writers Reveal Interview Your chance to be featured in our popular Writers Reveal Q&A series on On Creative Writing, plus promotion through our newsletter and social media platforms. It's an opportunity to share your story and connect with our growing community of readers and writers.

Who should enter?

This competition is perfect for writers who are:

  • Working on a substantial project (novel, nonfiction book, poetry collection, screenplay, or essay collection)

  • Feeling stuck, unmotivated, or uncertain about their next steps

  • Ready to invest in their craft and commit to the coaching process

  • Looking for professional guidance to elevate their work.

How to enter

The entry process is straightforward.

  1. Answer one key question: Why you deserve to win (500-1000 characters)

  2. Describe your writing project: For information only, tell us a bit about your writing project (300-700 characters)

  3. Pay the entry fee: Just $6 CAD to cover administration costs

  4. Meet the deadline: Entries close at 11 a.m. MST on Friday, December 19, 2025.

Your first answer will be evaluated by judges Sheelagh Caygill and Fiona Fenwick based on writing quality, persuasiveness, and style. This isn't about having the most polished manuscript—it's about demonstrating your commitment to growth and your potential to benefit from the prize.
